Getting involved at the TU Berlin

studentische Arbeitsgruppe

Academic and student self-government

The TU Berlin is organized like a small country: There is a charter to which all are bound, a president, vice-presidents, a chancellor, and academic self-government. As TU students, you can get involved directly and indirectly in university politics. With your enrollment, you receive the right to vote and the right to be elected. That means that you can vote or run for student representation in the faculty councils, institute councils, in the Academic Senate, in the Board of Trustees, in the Expanded Academic Senate, and in the central institutions.
Overview of the various committees at the TU

Student interest representation

At the TU Berlin, the student interests are represented by the Student Parliament (StuPa) and the General Student's Committee (AStA). AStA is elected by the Student Parliament to handle regular operations. It is divided into topic-related units. Besides being the students’ interest representation for university policy-making, AStA also offers various services and advising for students.

In the Fachschaftsinitiativen (department representative initiatives), students represent the concerns of their fellow students on a volunteer basis. The so-called INIs are involved in university politics, they operate student cafés and often organize events for new student orientation in their department.

Project workshops

Self-determined studies under the direction of tutors without professors or research associates, implementing ideas, developing projects independently, and in the end getting credit for coursework: At the TU, you can do that in the “Project workshops for socially and ecologically useful thinking and acting.” Students from all universities, in all semesters and degree programs can participate.

Ula - the first free store in the world

A free store is a place to give things away and make exchanges of things that you don’t need (anymore). Ula - the TU Berlin’s free store - was initiated in 2009 by students. The project combines ecological concerns with the social and economic aspects of sustainability. For this reason, it was awarded the seal of quality “Werkstatt-N-Projekt” by the German Council for Sustainable Development.
