Student ID

This is both your student ID and your Semesterticket (the travel pass for the Berlin-Brandenburg public transport authority), which allows you to travel on the local public transportation systems. You can use the QR code on the card to verify your student status. Your student ID also allows you to access a range of computer-based services.

How do I get my student ID?

When you enroll at TU Berlin, you receive an email explaining how to set up your student portal. As part of this process you need to upload a photo, which will then be used to create your student ID: Please note that your photo has to conform to the rules stated in the portal and requires a neutral background. 
Your student ID will be created within a few days and sent by post to your address in Germany. It is not possible to send your student ID to an address outside of Germany. If you have provided an address outside of Germany, you can collect your student ID in the Campus Center upon presentation of your national ID or passport. We regret that we cannot accept digital copies.


  • Re-enrollment at TU Berlin: If you returned your ID when previously terminating your enrollment and you still have an active tubIT account, then please follow the procedure described in "issue of new and replacement ID". As you still have an active account, you will not receive a new email to set up your student portal. There are no fees to pay for new ID in this case.

What is the Semesterticket?

The Semesterticket is your public transportation pass for Berlin (fare zones A, B and C). It is valid for one semester. Your student ID with integrated Semesterticket serves as your travel pass.

Activating and validity

Your integrated Semesterticket has already been activated when you receive your student ID as a newly enrolled student.

When re-registering, the ticket is re-activated for the relevant semester. Should you wish to be exempted from the Semesterticket or if you wish to terminate enrollment, the ticket will be automatically deactivated from the relevant date.

In the event of lost ID, both the Semesterticket and ID will from now on be automatically deactivated once new ID has been created.

The semester for which the ticket/ID is valid is not printed on the ID. The ticket’s/ID's validity can either be read via the QR code on the ID card or demonstrated by presenting your current enrollment certification (we recommend the latter).

Exemption from the Semesterticket

In special circumstances, you can apply to the Semesterticket Office for exemption from the Semesterticket. The Semesterticket Office is located in the General Students’ Committee Offices (AStA).

Subsidizing the Semesterticket fee

You can apply to the General Students’ Committee (AStA) to receive a subsidy for the Semesterticket fee. You need to be able to demonstrate when doing so that payment of the fee would cause you considerable hardship.
